 Suspected Armed Robbers Arrested in Mzuzu Following Public Alert

Police in Mzuzu have apprehended two men believed to be behind a wave of violent robberies that have unsettled residents in Chibanja, Big Five and Old Town areas of the city. Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson, Augustus Nkhwazi, confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects as 30-year-old Joseph Yusuf Anusa Phiri and 23-year-old Chrispin Kamanga. The duo was arrested on Thursday after police acted on information provided by concerned members of the public. According to Nkhwazi, the suspects are linked to more than four robbery incidents in which victims were reportedly attacked with panga knives before being dispossessed of their mobile phones, handbags and cash. Police have also revealed that Anusa Phiri, who is popularly known as Achimkono or Yugo, is facing an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Bullets Part Ways with Mponda in Wake of Wanderers' Title Triumph

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have parted ways with head coach Peter Mponda with immediate effect, a decision announced on Sunday shortly after arch-rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers clinched the 2025 TNM Super League title with a 6-0 win over Moyale Barracks. Mponda, appointed at the start of the season, guided Bullets to victory in the Airtel Top 8 Cup but fell short of delivering the league title, a key expectation at the club. Bullets thanked him for his service in a brief statement confirming the separation. Gilbert Chirwa has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season as the club begins the search for a permanent manager to challenge the newly crowned champions.

Goshen City Injects K100 Million into Malawi Film Awards as Main Sponsor

Goshen City has come on board as the main sponsor of the Malawi Film Awards and Gala with a K100 million sponsorship, a boost expected to significantly enhance the scale and quality of the annual event.  Organisers have hailed the support from Goshen City and its founder, Dr Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, saying the partnership will strengthen recognition of Malawian film talent and promote growth within the country’s creative industry.

 Five people have died in Lilongwe accident

Five people have died while one person is seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed last night at Youth Drive Junction near Sanctuary along Saulos Chilima highway. According to a police report, a 22 year old Wycliffe Liyati who was driving a Ford Ranger Double Cab, MG 134 AR from Parliament Roundabout heading down to Kamuzu Central Collided with a Nissan X- Trail which was turning right to join the Kamuzu Institute Road an impact caused five people to die on the spot. Two of the deceased are identified as Gerald Gwangwala a 40 year old Zimbabwean national and four year old girl Rolin Kamatenda. The other three are two women and a young boy who are yet to be identified.

Tollgate Fees to Increase from January 2026

 Tollgate fees will increase from January 1, 2026, with some charges doubling depending on vehicle type, following a government gazette signed by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation Joseph Mwanamveka Under the new rates, light and pickup vehicles will pay K2,000, minibuses K3,000, vehicles carrying 17 to 31 passengers or weighing five to 10 tonnes K8,000, those above 10 tonnes K10,000, while fees for abnormal loads have doubled to K40,000.

Mozambique Penitentiary Services visits the Malawi Prison Service

A delegation from the Mozambique Penitentiary Service visited the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) to appreciate how MPS is implementing some of its programs in regard to prisons here in Malawi. Speaking in an interview the Malawi Prison Service public relations officer Steve Meke, said the main purpose of the visit was to address challenges faced by foreign inmates in both countries and how best they can move forward hence forth. Meke said that the issue of safe custody, reformation, rehabilitation and community reintegration also came to light because they are aware that they can only achieve these four key elements if the environment is conducive for the inmates. He further said that the two services need the necessary support, equipment and skills in order for them to promote a healthy environment for the inmates.
