Tollgate Fees to Increase from January 2026

 Tollgate fees will increase from January 1, 2026, with some charges doubling depending on vehicle type, following a government gazette signed by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation Joseph Mwanamveka

Under the new rates, light and pickup vehicles will pay K2,000, minibuses K3,000, vehicles carrying 17 to 31 passengers or weighing five to 10 tonnes K8,000, those above 10 tonnes K10,000, while fees for abnormal loads have doubled to K40,000.

 Five people have died in Lilongwe accident

Five people have died while one person is seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed last night at Youth Drive Junction near Sanctuary along Saulos Chilima highway. According to a police report, a 22 year old Wycliffe Liyati who was driving a Ford Ranger Double Cab, MG 134 AR from Parliament Roundabout heading down to Kamuzu Central Collided with a Nissan X- Trail which was turning right to join the Kamuzu Institute Road an impact caused five people to die on the spot. Two of the deceased are identified as Gerald Gwangwala a 40 year old Zimbabwean national and four year old girl Rolin Kamatenda. The other three are two women and a young boy who are yet to be identified.

Mozambique Penitentiary Services visits the Malawi Prison Service

A delegation from the Mozambique Penitentiary Service visited the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) to appreciate how MPS is implementing some of its programs in regard to prisons here in Malawi. Speaking in an interview the Malawi Prison Service public relations officer Steve Meke, said the main purpose of the visit was to address challenges faced by foreign inmates in both countries and how best they can move forward hence forth. Meke said that the issue of safe custody, reformation, rehabilitation and community reintegration also came to light because they are aware that they can only achieve these four key elements if the environment is conducive for the inmates. He further said that the two services need the necessary support, equipment and skills in order for them to promote a healthy environment for the inmates.
