Navicha urges action as children demand stronger protection at NCC launch

Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Honourable Mary Navicha, MP, has called for stronger action to protect children from abuse, saying Malawi can no longer afford to ignore the growing cases of violence, exploitation and neglect.

Speaking on Saturday during the launch of the National Children’s Commission (NCC) at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe, Navicha said the Commission will play a critical role in safeguarding children’s welfare across the country.

“Children deserve better education, good health and a safe environment. Caring for our children is not just the responsibility of my ministry or government; it is for every Malawian,” she said.

The minister expressed concern over increasing incidents of child rape, abductions and killings, calling on the police, Ministry of Justice and development partners to work together to address the situation.

“We cannot just sit and watch our children suffering. The time has come for us to take action and protect them. We must move beyond policies and ensure implementation. We need to see lives changed and street children reintegrated,” she added.

Navicha said government under President Arthur Peter Mutharika is committed to supporting the work of NCC, particularly in rural communities where children face greater risks.

During the event, children also presented their concerns and recommendations, led by Form Four graduate Favour Chipsagule, who appealed for urgent reforms in schools and communities.

“We presented the challenges we face every day and asked government to follow up on our recommendations. We need disability-friendly classrooms, and we want harsher punishments for people who abuse or harass children,” she said.

Chipsagule emphasised that children want their voices to be taken seriously and their safety prioritised.

The launch brought together children from various schools, UNICEF representatives, government officials, NCC staff, religious leaders, civil society organisations and development partners. The event was also attended by NCC Chairperson, Bishop Vincent Mwakhwawa. Officials described the launch as a new chapter in strengthening child protection efforts in Malawi.
